As the UK currently sizzles in a series of heatwaves the last thing we want to worry about is wasps!
We are in the midst of the peak season which is typically during the hottest summer months, and at this time of the year they are busy building their nests, so it’s good to be aware of signs you may have wasps before nests get too large or the wasps themselves become aggressive.
Wasps can be a little misunderstood by the public, they are fascinating creatures and amazing architects, however they can also be highly aggressive if they feel threatened and many people are scared of the painful sting they can administer. This fear is only natural and it is the terror of seeing many of these insects buzzing around a nest which causes panic and apprehension.
You may find a wasps nest at home or potentially at your business. If you are a business owner then it is your responsibility to get it removed. Unfortunately, pests such as wasps will be a deterrent to your customers, and they may look unfavourably upon your business as a result, also no one wants their customers to potentially be stung!
This is particularly true if you are a café and have seating outside where wasps can be drawn to food and sugary drinks.

If you do discover a wasps nest then the best advice we can offer is to call upon a professional pest controller. Companies such as DALPEST Pest Solutions have the knowledge and skills to remove nests in the safest and most effective way possible for our customers.

Why you should call the professionals.
The reason getting a nest removed by professionals is so important, is because of the scale with which they can grow. There can be as many as 300 eggs laid per day within a nest, and if left until the late summer a single nest can produce anywhere from 3,000 – 8,000 wasps.
This time of the year is great for doing some initial checks and making sure your property is secure to prevent wasps entering and starting to build their nests. The nest will continue to grow as the season progresses so if you check look for something like you see in these pictures.
Check these common places for signs of a wasp nest;
- Garden sheds – wasps will strip wood in order to make their nests so finding them in sheds and summerhouses is very common.
- Lofts – these spaces are often easy for wasps to gain access to and they are quiet and disused, providing the perfect place for a nest to develop.
- Under eaves – wasp nests can also be external to a property, small gaps and spaces under eaves and windows are another popular choice for wasps.

Wasps and Bees are different!
People can easily make the mistake of confusing a bee swarm for a wasps nest. This is because they see lots of insects in one place and make an assumption that they know what they are.
Some professional pest control services can help to relocate swarms of honey bees, but bees behave differently to wasps and a swarm will often move along on its own without intervention after a couple of hours. We must stress however that we cannot and will not destroy any swarms of honey bees they are endangered.
So, if you do suspect that you have a wasp nest then please get in touch with us. We will be happy to help and offer advice if needed.
